Profile of the College

Alphonsa Arts & Science College, Sulthan Bathery, a minority institution affiliated to the University of Calicut under the Corporate Educational Agency of the Catholic Diocese of Bathery was established on 5 th August 2013 by the Bishop of Bathery, a great visionary, Educationist, Economist and spiritual leader Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thomas. The college is named after St. Alphonsa, a nun, an educator and the first Saint of Syro Malabar Church. The college started functioning in the premises of Mar Baselios College of Education, Sulthan Bathery and shifted to its new lush green Campus surrounded by Trees and Tea Plantations in Ootty Road. The Sulthan Bathery, the largest town in Wayanad District is known for Tourism and commercial activities in Kerala. Sulthan Bathery owes its name to the Eastern Ruler of Mysore, Tippu Sulthan who used this place for dumping his ammunition and for parking his artillery battering.

The College was started with a view to uplifting the poor backward tribal and other minority communities of Wayanad in particular and other districts in the state by commencing three Under Graduate programmes - B.Sc.(Chemistry), BBA and BA (Malayalam). Two more programmes - B.Com (Finance) and B.Sc. (Physics) were added in 2014 followed by BA (Functional English) and BTTM in 2015-16. Presently college offers 11 UG programmes and two PG programmes comprising of Arts, Science, Commerce, Management and Tourism. The college offers sufficient facilities to the students through well-equipped library, laboratories, Computer lab, Outdoor Stadium, Seminar Hall, Canteen and well-furnished Auditorium. The college has an active Career Guidance and Counseling Centre and placement drive takes place in most of the years. The college is planning about a significant development of infrastructural facilities to enhance the college to become a model Higher Educational institution in Kerala.

Alphonsa college is situated in a unique and scenic location near the Block Office in Sulthan Bathery, a town in the Indian state of Kerala. The campus is nestled amidst sprawling tea plantations, which provide a stunning backdrop to the educational environment. The location of the college makes it an ideal setting for students who appreciate nature and value eco-friendly living.

The college takes pride in its eco-friendly campus, and this is reflected in the surrounding environment, which is lush and green. The town of Sulthan Bathery has an interesting history that dates back to the time of the Mysore ruler, Tipu Sultan. It was once home to a battery that was used to store weapons, and this battery was named after Tipu Sultan himself. Over time, the place came to be known as Battery, and later, Sulthan Bathery. Today, the town is a vibrant and bustling hub of activity, with a rich cultural heritage that is reflected in its architecture, cuisine, and traditions.
